In chapter four of The Great Gatsby two stories are told. Gatsby tells Nick of his past and Jordan tells Nick of Daisy's. Chapter 2 opens with a beautifully written description of the Valley of Ashes. Reread this description and look at Fitzgerald’s use of imagery as well as the well-established symbolism. How does this relate to the rest of the chapter? Consider the well-placed details within Fitzgerald’s writing as well as the character development.
Every great piece of writing must go through a revision process. Deleting your own words can be hard to do, but many times is a necessary part of achieving an intended vision. Read the article "The Best Gatsby" on the Gatsby Page and then comment on some of the changes that were made.
