Chapter 2 opens with a beautifully written description of the Valley of Ashes. Reread this description and look at Fitzgerald’s use of imagery as well as the well-established symbolism. How does this relate to the rest of the chapter? Consider the well-placed details within Fitzgerald’s writing as well as the character development.
Every great piece of writing must go through a revision process. Deleting your own words can be hard to do, but many times is a necessary part of achieving an intended vision. Read the article "The Best Gatsby" on the Gatsby Page and then comment on some of the changes that were made.
Chapter one of The Great Gatsby tells us so much and so little. Nick Carraway introduces himself and then gives us a little background. Reread and analyze the first ten paragraphs of the chapter and then, using quotes to support your ideas, comment on how Nick (or Fitzgerald) has set us up to meet Daisy, Tom and Jordan (Miss Baker).
